Horsetail

Equisetum arvense, commonly known as Horsetail, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to all arctic and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Externally it was traditionally used to treat skin conditions, bites and wounds and to strengthen nails and internally as a diuretic. The buds are eaten as a vegetable in Japan and Korea in the spring. The plant is considered a "storehouse of metals" and contains several substances that can be used medicinally. It is rich in silicon, potassium, calcium, manganese, magnesium and phosphorus, phytosterols, dietary fiber, vitamins A, E and C, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides and phenolic ester of caffeic acid. Horsetail is considered a particularly important herb for stimulating weakened organisms. It is used as a tissue tonic and is reported to be effective in cases of brittle nails, dull hair and skin. Because of its anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, Horsetail can be used to help treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Also, its astringent action is considered to be beneficial in the case of stomach ulcers. Its prolonged use is not recommended, as it can cause a drop in the levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the body.
