Hops (Humulus lupulus), is a perennial, herbaceous and ramifying climbing plant of the cannabis family Cannabinaceae, native to Western Asia, Europe and North America.
Hops have strong sedative and hypnotic properties and are widely used to treat sleep disorders, restlessness, hyperarousal, hyperactivity, nervousness, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), irritability and anxiety.
In addition, it has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, diuretic and digestive properties and is used in disorders of the digestive system including anorexia.
Consumption of hops is generally considered safe, however in combination with sedative drugs it can cause severe breathing problems and excessive drowsiness. Also, hops contain phytoestrogens, which work like the human female hormone, estrogen. Avoid taking hops if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, including breast cancer and endometriosis. Finally, its consumption is prohibited at least two weeks before any planned surgery, as it can increase the sedative effects of anesthesia.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
