Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga Racemosa) is a species of flowering plant in the Ranunculace family, native to eastern North America. The roots and rhizomes were used in traditional medicine by Native Americans, while its extracts are prepared as herbal medicines or dietary supplements.
Chimichifuga root has the ability to mimic the action of estrogen, acting as a regulator of female hormonal activity. The herb exerts a powerful effect as a relaxant and smoothing of the female genital system and can be used with beneficial effects in premenstrual syndrome and aggravation during menstruation. Also, many medicinal products containing Black Cohosh extract are licensed in European Union states and recommended for safe and effective use in the relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and profuse sweating.
In homeopathy, the herb is known to be used against headaches, cervical syndrome and tinnitus. In addition, due to the salicylic acid it contains, it has an anti-inflammatory effect and is useful in cases of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and sciatica.
The recommended dose should not exceed 2g of Black Cohosh root daily. Overdose is not allowed to avoid unwanted side effects.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
