Borage

Borage (Borago officinalis) also known as starflower, is an annual herb of the family of flowering plants Boraginaceae, native to the Mediterranean region. In traditional medicine Borrage is used as a sedative and diuretic and as a treatment for seizures and kidney diseases. Today, fresh Borage is eaten as a garnish and used in drinks. Its seeds are pressed to produce oil, which is rich in fatty acids and is used as a dietary supplement. A useful part of the plant in herbal medicine is its leaves.
It is used for fever, cough, cold and bronchitis. It contains saponins, glyschrasma, tannins, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and essential oil. It acts as a diaphoretic, expectorant, sedative and anti-inflammatory. It is also used for adrenal insufficiency, to increase urine flow, prevent lung inflammation and to increase breast milk production.
The dried leaves of the herb are prepared as a decoction and drunk in small quantities.
