Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra), is a flowering tree of the Caprifoliaceae family, native to Europe and North America, with excellent edible and medicinal parts. All parts of the plant are used in medicine, in the coloring of alcoholic beverages as well as in the dyeing of fabrics.
The plant has been known since ancient times for its medicinal properties. We find it in the works on plants by the ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus and in the descriptions of plants by the great Greek physician of the early Christian years, Dioscorides.
Elderberry is rich in potassium nitrate, antioxidant flavonoids, anthocyanidins and vitamin C and is widely used to relieve flu and cold symptoms. As a homeopathic medicine it is used for the respiratory system, either upper respiratory (laryngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis), or lower respiratory (cough, bronchitis, asthma). After taking it the patient sweats profusely at night or during the day.
It is prepared as an infusion by pouring 2 teaspoons of dry leaves into a cup of boiling water, cover it and leave it for 10 minutes. Strain and drink up to three times a day.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
