Nettle

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant of the Urticaceae family. The leaves and stems of the plant act like hypodermic needles by injecting histamine and other chemicals that cause a stinging sensation on contact, itching and in some cases dermatitis.

Nettle contains gallic acid, histamine, caustic formic (formic) acid, chlorophyll, acetylcholine, tannins, serotonin, glucoquinones, many minerals such as calcium, potassium and manganese and vitamins A, B, C. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, detoxifying, antioxidant and antiviral action.

It is used in cases of rheumatism, to relieve the pain of arthritis and in cases of nephritis, cystitis, jaundice, diseases of the bile, stomach ulcers, and constipation. In addition, it is considered to contribute to the control of cardiovascular disorders and especially hypertension.

Nettle leaf extract has been reported to improve glucose homeostasis in vivo.
