Nepeta Cataria commonly known as Catnip, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Nepeta of the family Lamiaceae, native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of China. The name Catnip has been attributed to the plant because of the strong narcotic attraction it has on cats.
The aerial parts of the plant are useful in herbal medicine. Traditionally, Nepeta has been used to treat colic, cough, diarrhea, asthma and bronchitis. Medicinally, the plant has been used to treat digestive problems, indigestion, induce sweating, induce menstruation, as a sedative and to increase appetite.
Today Catnip is used in decoctions, due to its pleasant taste reminiscent of lemon with mint, to facilitate sleep especially in restless children and as a diaphoretic in cases of childhood infections, such as measles, flu and fever. It is also used in cases of stomach disorders, such as colic, flatulence and diarrhoea, again mainly in children, due to its mild action.
To prepare a (children's) drink, add 1 teaspoon of dried herb to a cup of boiled water and leave for 20 minutes.

Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
