Fumitory or tobacco grass (Fumaria officinalis) is an herbaceous annual, flowering plant of the Papaveraceae family, native to Europe and North Africa. It is a medicinal plant known since ancient times, while in Europe its use as medicine began at the end of the Middle Ages. Its most common traditional uses were as a digestive and diuretic, however it was used in Sicily to treat skin blemishes and later in Britain to treat conjunctivitis and as a wash for sensitive eyes.
Today the herb is approved in Germany as a tea, while in France and Spain it is marketed as a digestive, as it is believed to help increase bile flow.
Fumitory acts as an active choleretic herb, promoting the flow of bile and relieving problems of indigestion, flatulence, constipation, slow digestion or cramping pain. In addition, it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and is used against skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It can also be used for washing irritated eyes and inflammations of the female organs. Finally, it is claimed to act as a mild sedative and hypnotic herb.
The use of Fumitory requires special caution, as thorough toxicological research has not been conducted and there have been no studies on its safety or effect on pregnant women, children and the elderly.
