Heather (Calluna Vulgaris), is a low-growing evergreen flowering shrub of the Ericaceae family. It is widely found in Europe and Asia Minor in acidic and sunny soils. It has traditionally been used as a diuretic, sedative, for kidney stones and as an antidote to venomous bites.
The flowering shoots of the plant have antiseptic astringent, choleretic, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant and mild sedative properties.
Today, Heather is considered suitable for treating cystitis and fighting urinary tract infections. It is an excellent urinary tract disinfectant and gently increases urine output.
In combination with other herbs, it is used to treat diabetes, menstrual discomfort, menopause and nervous exhaustion.
Heather is considered safe for consumption as no part of the plant is toxic or harmful. However, in cases of chronic diseases or medication, expert advice is necessary.
