Mandrake (Atropa Mandragora), is a perennial herbaceous plant with a long, thick, branched root of the Solanaceae family, native to the Mediterranean. Mandrake has a long history of medicinal use, although superstition has played a large part in the uses to which it has been put.
The root is hallucinogenic and narcotic. In sufficient amounts, it induces a state of unconsciousness and was historically used as an anesthetic for surgical procedures. It was also used internally to treat melancholia, convulsions and mania.
Today, modern science ranks mandrake roots in the category of powerful analgesics, where coca leaves also belong. It contains valuable medicinal substances used for their antispasmodic and sedative properties.
However, the alkaloids it contains make the plant poisonous, through anticholinergic, hallucinogenic and hypnotic effects. Anticholinergic effects may lead to suffocation. Ingesting mandrake root is likely to have other adverse effects such as vomiting and diarrhea. Hyperactivity and hallucinations also occurred in the majority of patients.
WebMD classifies the use of mandrake as safe only as a prescription drug by qualified medical practitioners, which does not include herbalists.
The European Medicines Agency, which oversees the registration of herbal medicinal products in the European Union, does not recognize mandrake as an approved herbal medicinal product, substance or preparation under the European Directive on Traditional Medicinal Plants.
However, in very small and safe amounts the herb can relieve severe pain, spasms, and induce sedation and drowsiness.
Do not use without medical advice.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
