Marshmallow (Malva sylvestris), is a herbaceous perennial plant of the Malvaceae family, endemic to Western Europe, North Africa and Asia. The leaves of the plant are used in cooking and in salads in various countries around the world. In traditional medicine, it has been used internally as an expectorant and emollient and externally as a poultice to relieve eczema and pain from insect bites.
Marshmallow contains powerful antioxidants, carbohydrates and unsaturated fatty acids. Today it is used as an emollient, soothing and mild laxative in cases of stomach disorders, constipation and various gastrointestinal problems. It can also be used topically or in a bath to treat abscesses, burns, dermatitis, swellings and ulcers of the skin.
To prepare a drink, boil 1g. of herb per 100ml of water for 10-15 minutes. You can consume up to 3 cups a day before meals. No toxic effects have been reported from the use of Mallow.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
