Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), or passion flower, is a fast-growing perennial, climbing and flowering plant, now cultivated all over the world for its beautiful flowers. It was traditionally used, first in America and later in Europe, as a sedative herb for anxiety, insomnia, seizures and hysteria.
It is used to this day, as an antispasmodic and to soothe the nervous system, in neuralgia, spasms, whooping cough, insomnia, hysteria and atonic states.
In homeopathy, as well as in many regions of Europe, passionflower is used to relax hyperactive children.
Its consumption has been used safely in studies lasting up to 8 weeks, however prolonged use may cause excessive drowsiness or confusion.
It is recommended to consume up to 8 grams of dried herb per day in a drink, between meals. Prolonged use is not recommended, a general rule for all medicinal herbs.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
