Savory (Satureja Thymbra), is a perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family, with strong aromatic properties, endemic to Libya and south-eastern Europe. Its medicinal use, known since ancient times, helps against digestive problems, diarrhea, colic, flatulence and anorexia.
In ancient Greece it was highly valued for its medicinal and aromatic properties and it was added to wine making the "thrombite" wine. The main components of the herb, thymol, carvacrol and γ-terpinene, exhibit strong antimicrobial and fungicidal activity. It also contains high amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids, tannins, vitamin C and essential oil.
Savory acts effectively against intestinal parasites, is beneficial for stomach pains, diarrhea, nausea, helps digestion, neutralizes stomach gases and stimulates appetite. In addition, it works as an expectorant and emollient and is useful in cases of bronchitis, sore throat, severe cough and asthma.
Savory has the property of slowing blood clotting and therefore should be avoided by people taking anticoagulant drugs as it may lead to unwanted side effects.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
