Amaranthus (Teucrium Polium) is a native, herbaceous, small plant with small white and odorless flowers, which grows in rocky and dry areas of the Mediterranean. The herb has been known since ancient Greece for its healing properties and is mentioned by Hippocrates and Dioscorides as a remedy for nervous weakness and gastrointestinal ailments. Amaranthus is an astringent, laxative, hypotensive and healing herb. Today the juice of its fresh leaves is mainly used externally in cases of burns, wounds, hemorrhoids and chronic skin diseases, while it is also considered beneficial for the treatment of warts. Its use has been shown to have a positive effect by restoring the tissues on the surface of the skin and removing inflammation. It can be used on old wounds, bedsores and any other slow healing ulcer. In the form of a decoction it works as a hypoglycemic, hypotensive and tonic, but it can only be consumed with a doctor's prescription, as cases of toxic hepatitis have been reported. Its leaves contain liquid that can be irritating.

Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
