Angelica archangelica, is a perennial aromatic plant with white flowers that thrives throughout the northern hemisphere. It is an herb with a strong aroma that is used not only in herbal medicine but also in the preparation of alcoholic beverages and confectionery. It is one of the main ingredients of Chartreuse and Bénédictine liqueurs.
The therapeutic uses of Angelica have roots in Chinese herbal medicine, with the root being the part of the plant most commonly used for therapeutic purposes due to its high content of coumarins and essential oil.
Angelica has been cultivated since the 10th century and gained popularity among the Saami of Scandinavia, who considered it a sacred herb. In ancient times it was considered a "travel medicine" because of its ability to relax and open the mind. All over the world, it is believed that the plant protects against bad energy and infectious diseases. It is said to represent vision, wisdom, enlightenment and balance. Angelica essential oil is used in aromatherapy devices, as well as in massage oils for stimulation, relaxation, mental clarity and combating melancholy.
Today, angelica is used as a respiratory stimulant, which helps to facilitate breathing and clean the lungs, fight inflammation and clean the mucous tract. Dried angelica root is sold in many pharmacies and is often used as an ingredient in respiratory formulas.
It is also used as a circulatory tonic and menstrual regulator, while also soothing the discomforts associated with menstruation.
As an aromatic, bitter, stimulant decoction, angelica is useful for supporting digestive secretions and relieving gas and bloating. It is also thought to help improve appetite.
The foot bath or bath with angelica should not exceed 3 to 4 minutes because otherwise it causes irritation to the eyes. Overconsumption in the form of a decoction can cause disturbances in pressure and breathing. It is recommended that the treatment does not exceed two weeks in duration.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before taking them.
