Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) comes from a variety of a species of thistle that is cultivated as food. The edible part of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers bloom.
Artichoke is used today to treat liver and kidney disorders and arteriosclerosis. Two of the plant's active ingredients - cynarin and scolimoside - have been shown to stimulate bile secretion. This has the effect of assisting incomplete digestion and uniting the body in the case of insufficient liver function. Cynarine has also been shown, through clinical research, to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. For this reason, after all, Artichoke is effective in the treatment of arteriosclerosis.
Artichoke is used whole (all parts of the plant cut). In addition to cynarin and scolymoside, it contains scylomozides, inulin, kynaropectin, taraxasterol, phenolic acids (up to 2%) and a volatile oil (containing mainly B-Selinin and Caryophyllin).
The recommended dosage by the therapists for Artichoke is 6.0gr per day. Use 2.0g (one teaspoon) in 250ml of water three times a day. It has a slightly bitter, woody taste.
