Balm Lemon (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint family and thrives mainly in the Mediterranean. It has been used since the Middle Ages to treat gastrointestinal ailments, such as to relieve indigestion, bloating and colic.
Today it is used as a sedative herb to treat disorders of the nervous system, as an anxiolytic with an anti-depressant effect and a mild sedative. At the same time, it is particularly effective in cases of insomnia.
Recent studies also show that its consumption protects against ulcers, as it seems to increase the secretion of prostaglandin E2 and mucin from the body and reduce the secretion of acids.
To prepare the drink, add 2 teaspoons of the dried herb to a mug of boiling water and leave covered for 10 minutes before consuming.
