Bearberry (Uva Ursi -Bearberry) is a species of plant of the genus Arctostaphylos, widely distributed in areas of the northern hemisphere. It is an evergreen forest shrub or small tree with white pink flowers and a red berry fruit. The fruits of the plant are edible but have a bad taste. Its name comes from the words "bear" and "grape" as it is an excellent bait for bears. Only the leaves are used in herbal medicine.
Bearberry is used today mainly to treat cystitis. The decoction of its leaves is used as a tonic, diuretic and against kidney and bladder diseases.
The main component of Bearberry leaves that has a positive effect on treating cystitis is arbutin (content up to 17%). Arbutin is metabolized in the human body into hydricinone (glucuronide and sulphate) which has a strong antimicrobial effect.
Bearberry is a natural disinfectant of the urinary system and is considered very effective in cases of alkaline urine and inflammation of the bladder.
The maximum recommended daily dose of Bearberry is 10gr. We recommend that you consume the decoction in 3 doses of 2g (in a cup of water) morning, noon, evening. This is a very powerful herb that should not be consumed in large doses, nor for a long period of time.

Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
