Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens), owes its name to the peculiar appearance of its hooked fruits. A useful part of the plant is its bulbous root.
Its first use as an herb comes from South Africa, where it was considered useful in treating a variety of pain conditions. Today Devil's Claw is mainly used to treat arthritis, back pain, osteoarthritis and myalgia.
It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties, comparable to those of cortisone and the ingredient phenylbutazine used as an analgesic in musculoskeletal pain medications.
Contains arpogoside, B-sitosterol. alkaloids, phenolic acid and flavonoids. Its root is recommended to be consumed daily for at least a month, with a recommended dose of one teaspoon in a cup of water, 3 times a day.
Devil's Claw should not be consumed during pregnancy and in cases of cardiovascular disorders. Adverse effects and interactions with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also occur.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before using them.
