Felty germander or Teucrium Polium is a native, herbaceous, small plant with small white and odorless flowers, which grows in rocky and dry areas of the Mediterranean.
The herb has been known since ancient Greece for its therapeutic properties and is mentioned by Hippocrates and Dioscorides as a medicine for nervous atony and gastrointestinal diseases.
Traditionally, it has been used in cooking and herbal medicine, attributing astringent, healing, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to treat burns, wounds, and chronic skin diseases.
Today, the juice of its fresh leaves is used, mainly externally in cases of burns, wounds, hemorrhoids, and chronic skin diseases, while it is also considered beneficial for the treatment of warts. Its use has been shown to have a positive effect by restoring tissues on the skin surface and removing inflammation. It can be used on old wounds, bedsores, and any other ulcers that are slow to heal.
In the form of a tea, it works as a hypoglycemic, hypotensive, and tonic, however, it can only be consumed with a doctor's prescription, as cases of toxic hepatitis have been reported. Its leaves contain a liquid that can be irritating.
In gardening, felty germander is valued for its attractive appearance and its ability to attract bees and other beneficial insects.
However, while the plant has traditional uses in cooking and herbal medicine and offers benefits in the garden, the potential health risks require professional guidance before use.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before taking them.
