Hawthorn

Hawthorn (Crataegus Oxyacantha), is a genus of the Rosales order that includes about 200 species. It is a medium-sized, deciduous, slow-growing and drought-resistant tree or shrub that grows mainly in the northern hemisphere. Its red fruits are used in alternative medicine as circulatory system tonics. In traditional Chinese medicine the herb is used to regulate high blood pressure. Today the leaves, flowers and fruits of the tree are used for various health issues. The main action of Hawthorn is cardioprotective. According to studies, patients in the second stage of heart failure who were given an infusion of leaves and flowers noticed a significant reduction in palpitations, fatigue and shortness of breath. Hawthorn also exerts a vasodilating effect, relaxing constricted blood vessels and ultimately reducing blood pressure. It contains, among others, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and procyanidins. Procyanidins are responsible for the plant's ability to slow down the heartbeat. In addition, the high concentration of antioxidants it contains contribute to the neutralization of free radicals, protecting the body from exposure to environmental toxins such as air pollution and cigarette smoke. Long-term consumption of Hawthorn has no side effects, however it is possible that it interacts with other drugs for cardiovascular diseases.
