Hippophaes (Hippophae Rhamnoides), also known as Sea Buckthorn, is a species of thorny flowering plant of the Elaeagnaceae family, native to the cold-temperate regions of Europe and Asia. It is used in the food and cosmetic industries, in traditional medicine, as animal feed, in horticulture and for ecological purposes.

Sea Buckthornis a herbal pharmacy, as it contains vitamins A, B1, B2, C, E, K, beta-carotene, flavonoids, folic acid, organic acids, oleic acids and minerals (Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Selenium). Both the leaves and flowers of sea buckthorn are used in arthritis, gastrointestinal ulcers, gout and rashes.

It has strong antioxidant properties and is used to improve blood pressure and lipids, prevent and control cardiovascular symptoms (eg angina), reduce free radical levels and prevent atheroma. The strong antioxidant components of Sea Buckthorn make it useful for dealing with fatigue, weakness and reduced endurance. There are no reported side effects from consuming sea buckthorn in the form of a decoction and it is considered safe to take for up to six months.
