Lavender of the Lamiaceae family of the Lavandula genus is a plant endemic to the Western Mediterranean and widely known for its wonderful aroma and healing properties. It is extensively cultivated in temperate climates as an ornamental plant, for use as a culinary herb, and for the extraction of essential oil. It is used in traditional medicine and as an ingredient in cosmetics.
Lavender has calming properties and is effective in cases of melancholy and mild depression, to deal with nervous headaches, overexertion, anxiety and insomnia. It is also considered hypotensive and a cup of lavender tea before bed is reported to lower blood pressure and reduce rapid heartbeat during the night
When applied externally, it effectively treats skin diseases, such as fungal infections, wounds, eczema and acne. It is also used in a therapeutic bath for joint and muscle pain.
