Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) or Mallow or Water Mallow is a flowering plant native to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. It is an edible plant, as its flowers and small leaves can be eaten in salads, boiled, etc.
In herbal medicine all parts of the plant are useful.
It has traditionally been used as a treatment for mucous membrane irritation and in cases of gastric ulcer. References to the herb can be found both in ancient Greece and in the Middle Ages, while it is mentioned in the Bible as a valuable food in times of famine, as well as in Arabic and Chinese history as food for the economically weaker.
The herb mainly contains large amounts of vegetable glue, tannins, asparagine, glycosides, polysaccharides, carbohydrates, significant amounts of calcium, etc.
It is used by herbalists to treat problems of the gastrointestinal system, due to the high content of the plant in vegetable glue, which allows it to soothe and heal inflammations of the stomach and small intestine. In addition, its anti-inflammatory action soothes and heals the urinary tract, having a positive effect on the urinary system.
The recommended dosage by the therapists for Marshmallow is 6.0gr per day. Use 2.0g (one teaspoon) in 250ml of water (one glass) three times a day.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. We recommend that you always consult your doctor before taking them.
