"Peruvian Balsam or Balsam comes from the plant with the common name Myroxylon Pereirae. It was originally collected in Central America during the period of the Spanish invasion of Central and South America. From there, it was shipped to the port of Lima via Peru and erroneously acquired the name Balsam of Peru because it was shipped through there. Its export to Europe began in the seventeenth century for use in the German pharmacopoeia. Today, it is exported by artisanal process mainly from El Salvador."
