Samphire, with the scientific name Crithmum maritimum, is a plant native to certain regions of the Mediterranean and was originally used only in gastronomy. In recent years, however, its usefulness in pharmaceuticals has begun to emerge, mainly due to its content in chlorogenic acid (hydroxycinnamic acid) and its derivatives, an important antioxidant substance that also has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and immunological properties.
The essential oil of Samphire is used in pharmaceuticals as a diuretic (it enhances the smooth functioning of the kidneys), an excellent digestive and appetizer, a strong antimicrobial and blood purifier, while it is believed to contribute particularly to the smooth functioning of the liver.
In cosmetology, it is considered a powerful antioxidant and anti-wrinkle agent and is often used to create anti-aging cosmetics, as it seems to keep the skin young and fresh.
