Hamamelis virginiana, commonly known as witch hazel, is a species of flowering shrub native to North America and now widespread throughout the world. It has traditionally been used by North American Indians to treat skin diseases, while it became more widely known from 1850 onwards. Witch hazel is a powerful astringent herb and contains compounds with strong anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Official sources state that it produces a specific type of tannins called hamamelitannins. One of these substances exhibits a specific cytotoxic effect against colon cancer cells.
Today the herb is used topically, externally and effectively treats various skin inflammations such as irritations, acne, eye infections, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, phlebitis, bruises and sunburns. Also, due to its astringent properties, it is often used as a tonic lotion on the skin of the face and body. The use of witch hazel topically is done by preparing and placing a warm soaked compress on the affected area.
