Yerba Maté

Yerba Maté, with the official name ilex paraguariensis, is a plant native to South America and is the national drink in almost all of Latin America. The leaves of the plant are steeped in hot water to prepare the well-known drink mate. Today it is used worldwide in various energy drinks and sold bottled as iced tea. Its taste is bitter and resembles a decoction of vegetables, herbs and grass.
Both the plant and the drink contain caffeine. It also contains vitamins C, B2, B6 and Niacin, Magnesium, Iron, Selenium and polyphenols with a strong antioxidant effect.
In herbal medicine Yerba Maté is used as a nerve tonic and as a general booster of the immune system. Its consumption is beneficial in periods of intense physical fatigue, weakness or mental fatigue.
Due to the caffeine it contains, Yerba Maté can replace daily morning coffee for some periods, however, its systematic use is not recommended.
Also, in recent years, it has been added to many diet products and promoted as a dietary herb, due to its mild diuretic effect.
